Ranchi: The Jharkhand pavilion at the 44th India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2025 has become a key crowd-puller, showcasing the state’s potential in producing bio-ethanol from sisal (agave) plantation.
The state information and public relations department stated, “Sisal plantations have already covered 450 hectares in the state and the target is to expand by another 100 hectares this financial year. Last year Sisal yield reached 150 metric tonnes, while 82 metric tonnes has been targeted for the current year.”
Jharkhand is rapidly scaling sisal cultivation as a means of empowering rural livelihoods. The natural fibre obtained from the plant is widely used in ropes, mats, bags, and a variety of handcrafted products.
While the juice extracted from sisal offers promising potential for bio-ethanol production and clean energy, its medicinal and cosmetic applications are fostering local entrepreneurship. The plant’s ability to grow in low-fertility soil makes it vital for land conservation and climate-adaptive farming.
