YANGON, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar exported over 700,000 tons of corn in April and May of the fiscal year 2024-2025, earning nearly 200 million U.S. dollars, according to the Myanmar Corn Industrial Association (MCIA) on Wednesday.
This marks an increase of about 200,000 tons compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year, which recorded over 500,000 tons of corn exported, Phyo Ko Ko Naing, secretary general of the MCIA told Xinhua.
"We targeted 100,000 tons of corn for export in April but exceeded expectations with over 300,000 tons. In May, we aimed for over 140,000 tons but exported more than 400,000 tons," he said.
The corn export targets were significantly surpassed beyond expectations, he added.
The primary buyers of Myanmar's corn are Thailand, followed by the Philippines and India.
The major corn-growing areas in Myanmar include Shan State, Ayeyarwady region, Mandalay region, and Bago region. The association expects to export over 2 million tons of corn this fiscal year, Phyo Ko Ko Naing said.
