The challenge to textile sector triggered by Trump tariffs is hopefully a passing phase; there is hope for good tidings, Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan assured Tiruppur industrialists on Wednesday (October 29, 2025).
“With the current tariff rates, the textile industry cannot survive as US market accounts for half the textile exports. When Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal described the situation as tough, and that the negotiations were in progress, I insisted on faith (for positive outcome). The textile industries ought to (likewise) be resolute about getting to a position of doubling the exports to the US in future, the Vice-President said, at a felicitation programme organised by The People’s Forum of Tiruppur, all trade organisations and political parties on Wednesday.
Setting aside political leanings, sitting and former MLAs/Ministers of AIADMK, DMK, Congress, Tamil Maanila Congress, and MDMK joined Tiruppur Exporters’ Association and other industry and trade organisations in felicitating Mr. Radhakrishnan, who was on his first visit to his home town Tiruppur after taking over as Vice-President.
Going down the memory lane, the Vice-President said he could rise to hold the position only owing to the sustained support of well-wishers in the Tiruppur textile sector.
“If the world is looking up to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a global leader, even more than American President (Donald) Trump and Russian President (Vladimir) Putin, it is because of the capability to chaff out and imbibe only the good trait in others. The Prime Minister believes that all should be on board for the country’s progress in the interests of the people, Mr. Radhakrishnan said.
Vice-Chairman of Apparel Export Promotion Council A. Sakthivel, and S. Shanmugasundaram, president of South India Hosiery Manufacturers’ Association expressed pride on behalf of Tiruppur residents over Mr. Radhakrishnan assuming the post of Vice-President.
