Thyssenkrupp Nucera opens pilot solid-oxide electrolyser production plant in Germany

German electrolyser maker Thyssenkrupp Nucera has begun manufacturing solid-oxide electrolysers (SOE) at a pilot plant in Germany.

The new high-temperature machines will be able to produce green hydrogen using 20-30% less electricity than conventional low-temperature electrolysers when combined with an external source of waste heat, such as from a steelmaking plant.

Thyssenkrupp Nucera first announced plans to add SOE technology to its product portfolio in March 2024 as part of a strategic partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS).
