PARIS - TotalEnergies (NYSE:TTE) announced plans to produce more than 500,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually by 2028, positioning the company to exceed the European SAF blending mandate of 6% set for 2030.
The energy company will be capable of supplying SAF for more than 10% of the jet fuel volumes it markets in Europe, according to a press release statement from the firm.
TotalEnergies is developing multiple production facilities across Europe to meet growing demand for lower-carbon aviation fuels. The company is investing €500 million to transform its Grandpuits site into a biorefinery with capacity to produce 230,000 tons of SAF annually by 2026.
Additional production will come from the La Mède biorefinery in southern France, which will produce 15,000 tons of SAF this year, and through coprocessing operations at refineries in Normandy (160,000 tons capacity), Antwerp, Belgium (initially 50,000 tons, expanding to 80,000 tons), and Leuna, Germany (50,000 tons planned for 2026).
The company has secured a major supply agreement with Air France-KLM to deliver up to 1.5 million tons of SAF over ten years, and a separate contract with Volotea to supply SAF until 2029.
TotalEnergies has also established research partnerships with aerospace companies including Airbus and Safran (EPA:SAF) to study the impact of SAF on aircraft performance, particularly for blends exceeding 50% SAF content.
The development of sustainable aviation fuel is part of TotalEnergies’ broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector, which currently has limited immediate alternatives for decarbonization.
