UK bioenergy production falls in Q1

The U.K. government has released data showing energy production from biomass and waste sources fell by 4.7% during the first quarter of 2025 when compared to the same period of 2024. Total primary energy production for the quarter was down 1.5%.

The share of electricity generation from renewables fell by 4.9 percentage points to 46.3%. The decrease is primarily attributed to lower wind speeds and increase gas-fired generation.

Total renewable generation for the period was 36.9 terawatt hours (TWh), down 8.1%.

Bioenergy production fell by 2.9% to 9.7 TWh. Generation from hydro was also down, while solar generation was up. Generation from solid biomass, including wood pellets; municipal solid waste (MSW); and biogas all saw modest decreases, resulting in an overall decrease of 4.1% for bioenergy when compared to the first quarter of 2024.

Overall, bioenergy accounted for 12.1% of total renewables generation in the U.K. during the first quarter of 2025, down from approximately 13% during the same period of last year.
