US-UK trade deal expands market access for US ethanol

The Trump administration on May 8 announced a new trade deal with the U.K. that the White House said will create a $5 billion export opportunity for U.S. farmers, ranchers and producers, including more than $700 million in ethanol exports.

The U.K. is already a significant importer of U.S. ethanol. According to data published by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, nearly 13% of U.S. ethanol exports were destined for the U.K. last year. In terms of volume, U.S. ethanol exports to the U.K. reached approximately 243.84 million gallons in 2024. The estimated value of those exports was $535.18 million.

The Renewable Fuels Association and Growth Energy are applauding the Trump administration for securing greater market access for U.S. ethanol as part of the trade deal.

“We sincerely thank President Trump and his trade negotiators for ensuring that American-made ethanol is an important part of the trade agreement announced today with the United Kingdom,” said Geoff Cooper, president and CEO of the RFA. “While we are still awaiting the specific details of the agreement, we are excited about the prospects of expanded market access that will help boost our farm economy, while also delivering lower-cost, cleaner fuel to U.K. drivers.”

“In terms of trade with the U.K., the American ethanol industry had its best year ever last year of exports valued at over $535 million,” said Emil Skor, CEO of Growth Energy. “This trade agreement puts us on track to set another record, all to the benefit of American farmers, biofuel producers, and U.K. consumers. We look forward to learning more, and finding new ways to help the U.K. achieve its economic and environmental goals through the increased use of American biofuels. We commend the President and his team for making this deal and creating new opportunities for American ethanol and rural America.”
