The AIADMK would organise a demonstration in Tiruvarur on July 1, demanding a fair price for the produce of cotton farmers, party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami said on Thursday.
Senior AIADMK functionary and former Minister R. Kamaraj would lead the demonstration to be held near the railway station from 9.30 a.m., Mr. Palaniswami said.
Though traders from Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Erode districts usually took part in the auction by regulated markets, over the past few years, officials had not been taking steps to ensure their participation, he alleged.
“Farmers allege that local agents create their own ‘syndicate’ and take part in the auction. Hence, farmers are not able to get a fair price for their produce,” he said.
