Brazilian state signs early-stage deal for massive green hydrogen-based chemicals park

The state of Bahia in northeast Brazil has signed a letter of intent with GoVerde Energia for the development of an industrial park producing methanol and ammonia via green hydrogen, as well as 1.5GW of upstream solar.

GoVerde estimates that the industrial site would require R$5.4bn ($950m), while the vast array of solar panels in the municipalities of Juazeiro, Bom Jesus da Lapa, Pindaí, Brumado and Irecê would cost a further R$3.6bn ($633.5m).

The developer is already involved in multiple large-scale solar projects in Brazil, but has not yet produced green chemicals.

GoVerde had in 2023 also signed a memorandum of understanding with the state of Ceará, also in Brazil’s northeast, to set up a green ammonia plant at the port of Pecém.

In the first phase, GoVerde’s Bahia plant would be able to produce 300 tonnes a day of green methanol and ammonia (although it is unclear if this represents the combined capacity or production for each), as well as 155 tonnes a day of oxygen by-product from electrolysis for industrial usage.

The Bahia plant will be oriented towards exports, as well as supplying fuel for the aviation and maritime sectors.

A press release from the state government suggests that the industrial park will use German technology to produce the methanol, although it is unclear if this refers to the electrolyser or equipment used to produce the hydrogen derivative specifically.
