Deendayal Port leads India's green hydrogen charge with pioneering 1 MW facility

In a major push to India’s green maritime ambitions, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, on Monday, inaugurated the country’s first 1 MW Green Hydrogen Power Plant at Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla of Gujarat. The facility, developed in just four months, marks a critical step in realising the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Launched as part of a larger 10 MW project, the new module is expected to produce around 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The facility aims to power port operations and accelerate maritime decarbonisation.

“This is a major milestone under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a cleaner, greener, and self-reliant India,” Sonowal said, describing it as a model of “speed, scale, and skill” in implementation under the Maritime India Vision 2030.

The foundation stone for the 10 MW project was laid by PM Modi during his visit to Bhuj on May 26. DPA’s execution of the 1 MW phase within just four months sets a new benchmark in India’s green hydrogen rollout.

The plant, fully designed and built by Indian engineers, showcases a 100 per cent self-reliance in the hydrogen ecosystem. L&T led the engineering execution of the project.

Sonowal praised DPA’s green track record, and hailed the establishment of a fully future-ready hydrogen ecosystem built entirely by Indian engineers, calling it an inspiration for ports across the country to adopt eco-friendly and innovative technologies.

Minister of State for MoPSW Shantanu Thakur echoed the sentiment, calling the project a “bold step towards a sustainable maritime future”.

"This is a proud moment not just for Gujarat, but for the entire country. The commissioning of this Green Hydrogen plant at DPA highlights India’s growing leadership in clean energy, innovation, and self-reliance. I congratulate the entire team for taking this bold step

towards a sustainable maritime future,” the minister said.

At the inauguration, the Union Minister was joined by the Union Minister of State for MoPSW, Shantanu Thakur; the Secretary, MoPSW, T.K. Ramachandran, IAS; the Chairman, DPA, Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME; along with senior officials from the Ministry, the Port and L&T.
