Used cooking oil (UCO) collection and recycling company Quatra has signed a deal to supply French energy and petroleum company TotalEnergies with 60,000 tonnes/year of UCO for the production of biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
As part of the 15-year agreement, which begins in 2026, UK-headquartered Quatra would collect UCO directly from restaurants, restaurant chains and industry in France and the rest of Europe for filtering at its sites before being shipped to TotalEnergies’ biorefineries, TotalEnergies said on 17 June.
“This strategic agreement with Quatra contributes to our aim to secure the feedstock we need to produce biofuels. The development of biofuels is one of our company’s strategic goals,” said Valérie Goff, senior vice president, renewable fuels & chemicals, at TotalEnergies.
TotalEnergies has converted its petroleum refineries at La Mède in the south of France and Grandpuits near Paris into biorefineries.
Through its La Mède site, the company said it was the only producer of renewable diesel in France.
The facility produced 500,000 tonnes/year of biofuel and would also produce SAF for airports in the south of France, TotalEnergies said.
Due to be commissioned in 2026, the company’s Grandpuits site included a biorefinery with a production capacity of 230,000 tonnes/year of SAF.
TotalEnergies said it had partnered with organic waste collector and recycler SARIA to supply most of the site’s feedstock.
TotalEnergies has set a target of producing 1.5M tonnes/year of SAF by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The global oil and gas firm produces and markets petroleum products, natural and green gases, biofuels renewables and electricity.
