Despite a nearly 16% jump in sugar prices in a month, most Indian households have not cut back on consumption, according to a LocalCircles survey.
The survey found that 48% of households continued buying the same quantity of sugar, while another 22% said they were spending more but maintaining their consumption. Only 22% said they had reduced purchases for home use.
The findings come as the average retail price of sugar rose from Rs 48.18 per kg on July 20 to Rs 55.70 per kg on August 20, according to Department of Consumer Affairs data. Prices have crossed Rs 60 per kg in some markets and have reportedly touched Rs 70 in parts of Maharashtra.
The numbers point to an interesting reality: for most households, sugar is becoming more expensive, but not yet expensive enough to force a major change in buying habits.
