Tata Motors tests 500km-range hydrogen trucks in India's first green freight trial

Tata Motors has launched India’s first-ever hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials. The trial was jointly inaugurated by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi, marking a significant step in India’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.

The trial, conducted under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will involve 16 hydrogen-powered trucks operating across key freight corridors, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar, over the next 18–24 months.

These trucks will utilise Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (H2-FCEV) technologies.

Tata Motors secured the government tender to carry out the trial, which is funded by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. The objective is to evaluate the real-world commercial viability of hydrogen-powered long-haul transport and determine the infrastructure required for broader adoption.

At the launch, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari stated, “Hydrogen is the fuel of the future, essential for reducing emissions and boosting India’s energy self-reliance. This trial is a vital step towards greener heavy-duty transportation.”

Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi described the trial as “a crucial demonstration of green hydrogen’s potential to decarbonise Indian transport.”

For Tata Motors, this represents another pioneering effort in alternative fuel mobility. Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, said, “We are proud to spearhead this shift towards sustainable freight transport, in line with India’s green objectives.”

The trial includes three types of hydrogen trucks:

1. Tata Prima H.55S H2ICE prime mover

2. Tata Prima H.55S H2FCEV prime mover

3. Tata Prima H.28 H2ICE truck

With operational ranges of 300 to 500 km, these trucks are engineered for cost-efficient, zero-emission, high-performance cargo transport. Advanced safety features and the premium Prima cabin enhance driver comfort and productivity.

This initiative reinforces Tata Motors’ leadership in green mobility, building on its expanding range of battery electric, CNG, LNG, hydrogen, and fuel cell commercial vehicles.

Through this green hydrogen trial, India is not only adopting cleaner fuels but also shaping the future of sustainable freight transport on a global scale.
