Sinopec granted approval for China’s first cross-provincial green hydrogen pipeline

China’s first cross-provincial green hydrogen pipeline — which Hydrogen Insight understands will run 400km from Sinopec’s 20bn-yuan ($2.8bn) 1GW renewable H2 project in Inner Mongolia to a company oil refinery in Beijing — has been officially approved by local authorities.

The Inner Mongolia Energy Bureau, which gave the green light earlier today, merely stated that Sinopec’s pipeline will run from Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the country’s capital economic ring. But Hydrogen Insight has previously reported on the pipeline project, which was first revealed in November 2022.

The pipe is due to transport about 100,000 tonnes of wind-powered green hydrogen a year to Sinopec’s Yanshan Petrochemical in Beijing, which produces 94 oil-based products, including ethylene, synthetic rubber, synthetic resin, phenol and acetone.
